What you need to bring:

  • Bring unsigned original documents to be notarized. DO NOT SIGN THE DOCUMENT BEFOREHAND. Entire document must be present and completed, except the signature
  • Bring valid photo identification: Photo IDs must be current, issued by a government agency, and include the bearer’s recent photograph, signature, and physical description. Expired identification will not be accepted.
  • Bring any witnesses required: Library staff cannot serve as witnesses. You cannot solicit other library patrons to serve as witnesses. Witnesses must be personally known to the individual whose documents are being notarized. All witnesses must present valid photo identification as described above.

  • While many documents can be notarized, there are some exceptions. Library notaries are not authorized to notarize:
    • Birth and Death Certificates: Notaries cannot notarize birth or death certificates, as these documents are typically certified by the vital records department;
    • Marriage Certificates: Marriage certificates are not within the purview of notaries and must be obtained through the appropriate government channels;
    • Divorce Decrees: Notaries are not authorized to notarize divorce decrees, as these documents are issued by courts and require specific legal procedures.
    • Pistol Permits: photo must be taken at the sheriff’s office at time-of-issue
    • I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) forms: cannot stamp and seal this document under any circumstance
    • Mortage/Refinance documents and wills: too legal. This is not an exhaustive list, and the library reserves the right to refuse a notary service at its discretion.
